The supermarkets of the future will make good customer service - customer self-service. Your shopping cart will be equipped with an RFID reader and a display. You'll be able to use the reader to register your own purchases – check-out lines will be nothing but an unpleasant memory. Sensors in the floor will register where each item is scanned, which the system can use to help you find the coffee filters or the baby wipes. You'll also be able to receive personalized discounts, for example on your favorite shampoo brand.

The German supermarket chain Metro has already opened Future Store to trial a number of the RFID-enabled services that will soon be part of our daily lives. How will this intelligent shopping culture affect the retail market, when you can make reason based purchases by asking your shoping cart which item offers the best value for your money?
